The increase in opposition-ruled state governments after 1967 also prompted the Congress to use Presidents Rule to dismiss opposition-led state governments with increasing frequency (see Emergency Provisions and Authoritarian Powers, this ch.).Although the centr ist and right-wing opposition formed a grand alliance during the 1971 parliamentary elections, it was not until the general elections of 197
